Nissan LEAF grabs 2011 world car of the year award


The Nissan Leaf is the 2011 World Car of the Year. The Nissan has trampled 39 other nominees from all over the world, from which three finalist were shortlisted - Nissan Leaf, Audi A8 and BMW 5 Series.

Carlos Ghosn, Nissan Chairman and CEO said, "It is a great joy that the world's first, mass-marketed electric vehicle, the Nissan LEAF, has won the prestigious award of 2011 World Car of the Year. This accolade recognizes LEAF as comparable in its driving performance, quietness and superb handling to gas-powered cars."

The Leaf, a 5-seater, 5-door hatchback is the world's first, purpose-built, mass-produced electric car. It's lithium-ion battery modules and electric motor generate 108hp and 28.48kgm of torque, propelling the hatch from zero to 100kph in 11.5 seconds and a top speed of 145ph. The lithium-ion batteries takes around 8 hours to recharge using 220-240V power supply and as per the company claims, has a range of over 160km on a full charge.

Vehicles are selected and voted on by an international jury panel comprised of sixty-six top-level automotive journalists from 24 countries around the world. The jury panel includes Hormazd Sorabjee, Editor, Autocar India and Renuka Kriplani, Editor Autocar Show.

In other categories, Ferrari 458 Italia beats Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and Porsche 911 Turbo to take the World Performance Car award. In the World Car Design of the Year category, the Aston Martin Rapide takes the top spot leaving behind 50 other competitors in the category. While, Chevrolet Volt is the World Green Car award after beating BMW 320d EfficientDynamics and Nissan Leaf.
