The Mercedes E-Class cabriolet review, test drive (convertible)

Buying a convertible in India is like buying a speed boat in Rajasthan. Hot, dusty and humid conditions make them barely useable and they are a perfect recipe for sunstroke. That is why it is extremely rare to spot a convertible. But it’s the exclusivity of convertibles that makes them desirable and when the weather is right there’s no denying the special charm of driving with stars above you and wind in your hair.
One such rare car on sale in India is Merc’s E-class Cabriolet. A mere glance is enough to know that Mercedes has done a good job with the design. It looks good, especially with the hood down, and there is plenty of exotic appeal as well. The soft-top doesn’t take much away from the design and the Cabriolet looks good even with the roof up.
The E-Cabriolet is powered by the same 3.5-litre V6 engine from the coupĂ© version of the car. It puts out an impressive 272bhp and 36.1kgm of torque. But considering that the Cabriolet is 120kg heavier than the E-class, more power would have been welcome. Still, the car is quick to respond from standstill and there is lots of torque available. However, if you’re looking for sports car performance, you are in for a disappointment. This car actually does a good job as a grand tourer. When you are cruising at high speeds, this Merc is good at covering pace at a good rate. But it’s when you try to go fast or overtake on a two-lane road that you realise it takes time to gain momentum. It is primarily the gearbox’s fault as the slow ’box takes its own sweet time to downshift. The key to enjoying this car though is to drive it at considerably less than 100 percent. In terms of outright performance, the Cabriolet takes 7.90sec to reach 100kph and has a limited top speed of 250kph. In-gear acceleration times are decent too but nothing spectacular.
As the E-Cabrio sits on a stiff suspension setup, it handles well. The car is eager to turn in corners and inspires a lot of confidence. The accurate steering is direct and the E-Cabriolet is quite nice over a ghat road. The flip side is the extremely harsh ride and the E-Cabriolet crashes over sharp surfaces, which can be a bit jarring at times. It levels up well as you go faster but, as with most convertibles, there is a fair amount of scuttle shake and you can feel tremors through the body every time you hit a bad patch. Our test example with 17,000km on the clock was already rattling like a taxi. This is simply unacceptable in a Mercedes.
The E-Cabriolet costs Rs 66.47 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). At this price and for this kind of car, desirability and sex appeal are everything and that’s where the E-Cabriolet excels. It will stand out of the crowd in most parking lots and has the desirability quotient only a few cars can match. Yes, the ride could have been better, the build quality is not up to Mercedes standards, and it could have had more power. Also, if you are looking for sports car performance, look elsewhere. The E-Cabrio is for someone who wants an open-top GT that seats four, is reasonably nice to drive and comes with all the modern safety features you expect in a luxury car today.

Mercedes Benz lauches the SL 350 and GL 500 4MATIC cars.

Mercedes-Benz has been one of the biggest contributors to the Indian Luxury car segment since starting its local assembly operations in March 2009. Seeing the growing demand for its high-end passenger and performance cars here in India, the German car maker has so far managed to bring almost its complete line-up of models across multiple categories, which now include the GL-Class, M-Class, CLS-Class, SLK-Class, SL-Class, CL-Class, the new E-Class Cabriolet and the exquisite R-Class.
In a bid to widen and further strengthen its India product portfolio, German luxury carmaker Mercedes Benz has rolled out its latest SL 350 and GL 500 4MATIC cars.
Managing Director and CEO Mercedes Benz India, Peter Honegg told media persons in Delhi that both cars had unique USPs. ‘While the SL Class is sportier, aggressive and of course,  packed with benchmark safety features and technology, the GL 500 being one of the most powerful SUVs in the world, is ideal to suit the tastes of the growing number of off-roading aficionados in India.’

GL500

The GL500 4Matic is not only the at the top of the Mercedes-Benz SUV hierarchy, but is also one of the most powerful SUV’s in the world. Coming with a 5.4 litre V6 engine that produces a nerve wracking power of 388 hp and a staggering 530 Nm of torque, the new GL500 4Matic will now to available to those in India take their off-roading trips very very seriously, and willing to spend a fortune is getting the best four wheeler for the job.

A 7G TRONIC 7-speed gearbox allowing shorter gear shifts, 20-inch alloy wheels and the extraordinary AIRMATIC suspensions on the GL500 make it one of the best off-roaders even to hit the sub-continent.  Interiors have also been decked up a fair bit as can be seen in the new rear entertainment system with its 8-inch colour screen, and the Harman Kardon system, which is ideal for a back seat movie viewing or a fun gaming experience.
For those intimidated by the GL500 massive outer shell, it’s PARKTRONIC and COMAND system with Linguatronics and a reversing camera will help you manoeuvre the car easily into tight parking spaces.
For those who can afford it, the new top of the line GL500 SUV from Mercedes-Benz will sell for 98.5 lakhs in India (ex-showroom Delhi).

SL350

We aren’t new to the SL family of sports cars from the Merc stables, but this new SL350 is no ordinary sports car. Featuring a high-revving 3.5 litre V6 sports engine, SL350 produces a power of 315 hp and torque of 360 Nm giving it ample muscle to be an absolute outperformer on Indian roads. For more accurate and drive sensitive steering the SL350 comes with a Direct Steering (Variable Servo Assistance) reduces the need to turn the wheel and increases agility.

An aerodynamic design that is undoubtedly reminiscent of the SL’s history, the SL350 flaunts attractive exteriors like its Gill-like trim panels, its prominent front-end V shape and functionally designed main and auxiliary headlamps. Interiors come together beautifully in the form a three-spoke steering wheel, chrome inserts, 3D dial surrounds and NAPPA leather seats. An AIRSCARF neck level heating that maintains neck level temperatures on a cold day is one of the unique luxury function of this sports coupe.

The new “sports package” included Mercedes-Benz SL350 can be yours for a stifling 98.5 lakhs (all prices are ex-showroom Delhi).

Mercedes Benz planning GLC and GLK Class to take on BMW’s X1 and X3 in India

Mercedes Benz GLK SUV

The BMW X1 has opened-up an all new segment in the Indian SUV market. The BMW X1 is placed as an entry-level premium SUV. The BMW X1 is priced between Rs 22 lakh to Rs 29 lakh ex-showroom Delhi. Other manufacturers including Audi are now scrambling to launch a product in this segment. Audi has plans of the Q3 which could be launched by 2012.

Mercedes Benz has been fairly quite since the launch of the BMW X1. But now, even Mercedes Benz is planning a SUV in the entry level segment. According to Fanofautos who are quoting Mr. Peter Honegg, MD and CEO Mercedes Benz India saying that the X1 rival from Mercedes Benz will arrive in 2013-14.
The Mercedes Benz GLC will take on the X1 in India. The GLC will be primarily front-wheel-drive to keep the costs down and will feature an inline 4 cylinder engine mated to a 7 speed automatic. The GLC Crossover will come packed with the latest safety features as well and Mercedes Benz will try to make this the car’s USP.

Secondly, Mercedes Benz is also weighing in on the GLK to take on the BMW X3. As we all know, BMW is the current leader in the premium segment in terms of sales. Mercedes Benz will be keen to get on top once again. At the moment GLK is only available with left-hand-drive hence, Mercedes will have to wait for the new model to arrive before launching it in India.

                             2013 Mercedes Benz GLC CrossOver

The Mercedes Benz GLC Crossover, which will be Mercedes Benz’s answer to the likes of the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3 could arrive in India only by late 2012 or early 2013, after it’s European launch. More importantly, the unveiling of the 2012 A-Class concept at the recently concluded 2011 New York Auto Show has given us plenty of hints as to what the GLC Crossover would feature.
As we already know that Mercedes Benz’s range of cars based on the MFA platform would feature front wheel drive to keep costs low, the GLC will come with a inline four engine which would most probably feature a turbocharger for bumping up power, keeping down emissions and fuel consumption. Also, both manual and 7 speed automatic gearbox variants may be offered on the GLC.
Mercedes Benz wants to make sure that even it’s smallest entry level cars are rated highly on the safety parameters. So, Mercedes Benz’s Pre-Safe technology and Brake Assist could most certainly be a standard piece of kit on the GLC Crossover. Finally, the styling of the GLC is expected to follow a muscular and curvy design all around just like what we saw on the Mercedes-Benz A-class concept.
By the looks of it. Mercedes Benz seems very serious about giving the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3 a real run for their monies. On how successful the front wheel drive Mercedes Benz GLC Crossover scheduled for a 2013 release in India would really be, that only time can tell.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is an Anglo-German grand tourer car jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren Automotive, built in Portsmouth and the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey, England and sold from 2003 to 2009. When it was developed, Mercedes-Benz owned 40 percent of the McLaren Group. Due to the automatic gear box, front mid-engined arrangement, and its driving characteristics, some commentators classify the SLR McLaren as a GT, whose rivals would be vehicles such as the Aston Martin DBS V12 and Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano.

SLR stands for "Sport, Leicht, Rennsport" (sport, light, racing). Mercedes-Benz stated that they would build 3,500 SLRs over seven years, with an annual production of 500 cars. The car's base price, GB £295,337 (approx. US$450,000, €350,000, CHF 500,000 or C$ 500,000. 2009), made it the ninth most expensive street-legal car in the year 2008.

The SLR sports a 232 kg (510 lb) hand-built 5,439 cc (5.439 L; 331.9 cu in), supercharged, all-aluminium, SOHC V8 engine. The cylinders are angled at 90 degrees with three valves per cylinder and lubricated via a dry sump system. The compression ratio is 8.8:1 and the bore and stroke is 97 millimetre (3.82 in) and 92 millimeters (3.62 in), respectively. The Lysholm-type twin-screw supercharger rotates at 23000 revolutions per minute and produces 0.9 bar (13 psi) of boost. The compressed air is then cooled via two intercoolers. The engine generates a maximum power of 626 PS (460 kW; 617 hp)@6500rpm and maximum torque of 780 N·m (580 lb·ft)@3250-5000rpm.

Unlike most of its contemporaries, its engine is front-mid mounted. McLaren took the original concept car designed by Mercedes and moved the engine 1 metre (39.4 in) behind the front bumper, and around 50 centimetres (19.7 in) behind the front axle. They also optimized the design of the center firewall.

Mercedes-Benz SLK 2011

Mercedes-Benz SLK 2011 Mercedes-Benz face like SLS AMG and Mercedes-Benz CLS. With the new design, New SLK has a better aerodynamic coefficients of the second generation, from 0.32 to 0.30. For the first time Mercedes-Benz offers a choice of 3 roof light. First, body-colored roof. Both dark glass roof. Finally, Magic Sky Control (first in the world) - you can turn it into light or dark via a button.

Mercedes-Benz will offer new machines with direct injection. 4-cylinder engine, 1,800 cc, is available in a choice SLK 200, BlueEFFICIENCY (184 hp) and the SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY (204 hp).

As a true roadster that provides fun-to-drive, making Mercedes-Benz offers three suspension choices. First, the conventional steel suspension as standard. Both sporty suspension is harder. Third, Dynamic Handling package, where the damping system is electronically controlled automatic full, so the car is running smoothly despite the rough road across the surface and no loss of driving dynamics.

Dynamic Handling Package consists of the Direct-Steer system and Torque vectoring Brakes. Direct Steer offers better handling and agility as well as reduce the power you turn the steering wheel when parking. Torque vectoring Brakes provide certain braking on the rear wheel when the car is cornering. The result, the car can bulldoze bend properly and easily controlled.

Mercedes Benz M Class

The third generation of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class sets new benchmarks in the SUV world with its leading-edge automotive technology. The new M-Class boasts optimum energy efficiency, leading standards of passive safety, outstanding ride comfort combined with superb driving dynamics, as well as a completely revamped interior design offering excellent ergonomics among its key strengths.

Mercedes Benz M Class

The low fuel consumption and exemplary emissions figures make impressive reading - on average, the entire model range burns 25 percent less fuel than the predecessor. Never before has Mercedes-Benz succeeded in cutting fuel consumption by such a huge margin with an SUV model change. An ultramodern engine line-up, a class-beating Cd value of 0.32, extensive BlueEFFICIENCY measures, as well as new development tools such as the "energy-transparent vehicle" all play their part in delivering the good energy efficiency figures. The ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC is particularly outstanding in this respect: it is 28 percent more economical than its predecessor, consumes just 6.0 l per 100 km on the NEDC driving cycle (158 g CO2/km) and can cover as much as 1500 kilometres on a single tank of fuel.

Mercedes Benz M Class

In line with the Mercedes-Benz brand philosophy, the new Mercedes-Benz M-Class represents the embodiment of the Mercedes-Benz holistic safety concept of Real Life Safety, which is derived from what happens in a real accident situation. In combination with the front and rear deformation zones, the high-strength passenger cell of the M-Class provides a highly effective foundation for the occupant protection systems. Both active safety and driver-fitness safety in the new M-Class are further improved by assistance systems that will already be familiar, primarily from the S-Class and E-Class.

All models in the new Mercedes-Benz M-Class range offer excellent comfort and dynamic handling as standard - both on the road and away from the tarmac. Besides the steel suspension with selective damping, there are also some new chassis developments and innovative dynamic handling control systems available, which are designed to make driving the new premium SUV an even more effortlessly superior experience. These include the AIRMATIC air suspension with Adaptive Damping System (ADS), the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilisation and the ON&OFFROAD package with six driving modes. A comprehensive package of measures has also been included to ensure that the M-Class is at the forefront of its segment for acoustic and vibration comfort too.

Mercedes Benz M Class Interior

The third generation of the highly coveted Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV combines the best of both worlds, boasting a strong off-road heritage at the same time as making its passengers feel as if they are travelling in a luxury premium saloon. Ground aluminium or exquisite woods as well as the finely detailed switches and trim highlights blend with electrifying surfaces and powerful, harmonious lines to create a high-class interior ambience and a tremendous sense of wellbeing for both the driver and passengers.

Mercedes-Benz S-class gets new engine

Mercedes Benz India will soon expand its S-class range with more engine options. An entry level S300L with a 2996cc V6 developing a modest 228bhp is on the cards and is expected to cost ‘only’ an approximate Rs 70 lakh.
The S300L will undercut the current S350L, which has recently been discontinued, by a substantial margin.  The S300L, which makes sense as a chauffeur-driven car, will also give a tough fight to the Audi A8 and BMW 7-series.
Mercedes will further strengthen the S-class line in the coming months with the S350 CGI which gets Merc’s latest direct-injection V6. As a result, power is up to 302bhp from 272bhp in the standard version.
Completing the petrol line-up is the S500 CGI which churns out a thumping 429bhp to blend pace and grace like no other luxury saloon in India. The S-class sold 1131 units in the last financial year and Mercedes hopes to increase S-class sales with the new range of engine by around 40 percent.

!. Mahindra renames Logan as Verito
Following our scoop on the rechristening of the Renault Logan as the Mahindra Verito yesterday, M&M has launched the car much before the anticipated unveiling later next month.  This comes a year after Mahindra & Mahindra announced its decision to acquire Renault’s 49 percent stake in its JV.

The name Verito is derived from the Latin ‘Veritas’ which means truth. The Verito will cost Rs. 4.82 lakh (petrol BS3 version) and Rs 5.62 lakh (Diesel BS3 version). A BS 4 variant will also be available.

The Verito will come with the same Renault 1.5 DCi CRDi diesel and 1.4 MPFI petrol engines.  Apart from the Mahindra logo, the Verito gets redesigned fog lamps, roof rails and side rub strips. The rear gets a dash of chrome and a spoiler lip to give it a more premium feel. Like the Logan, the Verito offers features like ABS with EBD, driver airbag, head restraint for all seats, side impact beams and the driver information system.
Sales of the Logan have increased since M&M lowered the saloon’s price a year ago. In March, 1017 units were sold and 10,000 and odd were sold in 2010-11. The Verito will take on the Indigo Manza, Swift Dzire and the Etios. A sub-four-metre Verito will debut later this year.

!. Skoda all set to launch Vento challenger also known as (Skoda Rapid)
Skoda is all set to reveal its VW Vento challenger, called the Rapid. Skoda has used the Rapid moniker several times in the past and it’s slated for a comeback when the saloon is launched during Diwali this year.

Built on the same platform as the Vento (code: VW251) the Skoda iteration (code SK: 251) will share most mechanical bits with the VW saloon which includes engines as well. Hence, the Rapid will come with the same 1.6 petrol and diesel motors both of which develop 105bhp.

However keeping the positioning of the two brands in mind, Skoda will price its Rapid slightly below the Vento and a couple of features could be deleted from the Rapid’s equipment list too. Sources inside Skoda also claim that the Czech company plans to shake up the market by launching an affordable version of the Rapid, priced in close proximity to Maruti’s SX4, which translates to a price (ex-showroom, Delhi) of approximately Rs 7 lakh for the petrol and Rs 7.80 lakh for the diesel.

The design language for the Rapid is thought to be based on the Vision D concept car shown in Geneva. A wider grille, simple but bold lines and beautifully crafted surfaces could mean this car looks better than the Vento. One Skoda trait missing on the car, however, will be the hatch, something that has been sacrificed in the interest of cost. Instead, the Rapid will get a traditional boot. The Rapid is also likely to see the introduction of Skoda’s updated chrome on black logo which looks much more modern and avantgarde.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
Design Exterior
The future-oriented, puristic design has drawn inspiration from the proportions of classic Mercedes-Benz sports cars. Opening the gullwing doors reveals the sweeping curved design with large opening angle. The extended bonnet, distinctive V-shaped front section and large air intakes as well as the low-position passenger compartment and the gently sloping rear of the vehicle are the embodiment of sports car design and give it the true look of a racing car. The innovative bi-xenon front headlamps with daytime driving lights and LED indicator lamps not only illuminate the road but also contribute greatly to the distinctive visual impact of the supercar.
Viewed from the side, the long wheelbase and short body overhangs are eye-catching features. The distinctive waistline that runs along the entire side wall and the prominent, powerful wheel arches underline the classic design of the SLS AMG – as if cast from a single mould.
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Interior
Design Interior
Design elements taken from aircraft construction are also reflected here – right down to the smallest detail. Situated prominently in the solid metal centre console, the AMG DRIVE UNIT with AMG E-SELECT selector lever mirrors the style of a jet control panel. The wing-shaped instrument panel featuring four distinctive air vents and the AMG instrument cluster with white-backlit round dials is commanding and distinctively puristic. High-quality sports seats with magnesium backrests are finished in stylish designo leather or designo Exclusive leather and are available in nine colour shades to match the exterior. The classy designo Exclusive natural/braided leather upholstery in light brown is also available upon request.
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
Engine
The advanced AMG 6.3-litre V8 motor makes the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG one of the most powerful sports cars in its class. The V8 high-speed engine with 6208 cc capacity is a completely modified version of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 basic engine. The 8-cylinder engine responds to the slightest movement of the accelerator with superb agility across the entire engine speed range and displays the typical features of a high-performance racing car.
The maximum output of 420 kW is achieved at 6800 rpm. The maximum torque rating of 650 Nm is reached by the 8-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine at 4750 rpm.
The gullwing model accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and achieves a top speed of 317 km/h.
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG: fuel consumption combined: 13.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 308 g/km.
Suspension
The AMG sports suspension in the SLS delivers uncompromising racetrack performance. It employs a double wishbone suspension concept – proven in motorsport – on all four wheels. Spring struts specially developed/adapted for the SLS as well as the separation of wheel control and suspension generate a significant reduction in pitching when accelerating and braking. This way, the best possible road surface contact is maintained, even when performance is pushed to the limit. The long wheelbase (2680 mm) supports directional stability and the wide track (1682 mm at the front and 1651 mm at the back) reduces wheel load displacement on winding roads.
Steering
To meet the expectations associated with a supercar and maintain control of the vehicle even in the most demanding sporty driving situations, AMG sports parameter steering has been integrated in the SLS.
This speed-sensitive power steering delivers a direct steering experience. It also enhances driver feedback as the vehicle speed increases – a crucial factor when driving quickly on a straight road.
AMG Performance steering wheel with a flat lower section and oval profile is upholstered in nappa leather and perforated on the side grips. This ensures handling comfort and a secure grip for use in challenging driving situations.
Transmission
The new AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission with four drive modes and Race Start function is responsible for power transmission. Weighing just 136 kg, the transmission system employs an integrated mechanical differential lock to guarantee outstanding traction. The system is characterised by rapid gear changes, practically without interruption to tractive power. In simple terms: shift up at full load to experience even more dynamic acceleration for maximum driving pleasure.
Drivers can choose from four drive modes (ranging from comfort to extremely sporty) and a Race Start function. Real metal shift paddles are used to move up and down the seven gears. A short pull on the left (–) or right (+) shift paddle is enough to select the required gear.
